The Heart of One-on-One Discipleship

YWAM Perth is a place for young people to know God and make Him known.

At Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Perth, one of the key aspects of mentoring young missionaries is the intentional practice of one-on-one discipleship. As a mentor, I have the privilege of guiding, encouraging, and helping young missionaries grow in their faith and mission.

What is One-on-One Discipleship?

One-on-one discipleship is a structured yet relational connection between a senior leader, usually a ministry leader and the staff of the ministry. The purpose is to help the staff cooperate with God in their spiritual growth, learning to apply what they receive in ministry and beyond. These meetings provide a safe space for honest conversations, personal reflection, and spiritual guidance.

The Role of the Mentor

As a mentor, my responsibility is not to dictate a staff's journey but to facilitate their growth by creating a space for reflection, asking questions that encourage staff to process what they are learning, and actively listening to their struggles, victories, and uncertainties with a heart to understand. I encourage personal accountability, helping staff take ownership of their faith and mission, while also praying with and for them, seeking God’s wisdom together. I provide biblical counsel and feedback, speaking truth in love to guide them toward God’s best for their lives.

Why One-on-Ones Matter

One-on-one discipleship is essential in helping young missionaries grow in their relationship with God, develop Christlike character, and gain biblical wisdom. It strengthens their ability to share the Gospel effectively, fosters accountability and personal responsibility, and provides deeper insight into YWAM’s mission and opportunities. Through these intentional relationships, staff are equipped to walk in obedience to God, make a lasting impact in their communities, and carry out the Great Commission with confidence and clarity.

As I serve in this role, I see firsthand how intentional mentoring transforms lives. Young people are stepping into deeper relationships with God, gaining confidence in their calling, and being equipped to make a lasting impact in the nations. This work is not just about imparting knowledge—it’s about walking alongside young missionaries as they discover their identity and purpose in Christ.
